Abu Dhabi rolls out variable electronic message signs

Date: 5/4/2013

Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport has announced it will install more than 80 variable electronic message signs across the city.

The boards are expected to be introduced in the first half of next year, with motorists given live information in Arabic and English in a bid to ease congestion.

Warnings on changing road conditions such as crashes and building works will be provided by the signs, enabling drivers to adapt their routes or reduce speed accordingly.

Faisal Al Suwaidi, General Director of Main Roads for the Department, explained that the initiative will improve safety and empower motorists to react to unexpected events on the roads.

"The launch of [the] project is a testament to our commitment to providing our community with safer roads across the city of Abu Dhabi," he said.

In addition to traffic and construction work, the signs will also provide information on changing weather conditions.
