Advanced motorcycle training 'makes people safer riders'

Date: 1/12/2010
Motorcyclists who have completed advanced training have safer riding habits than those with a high level of experience, according to new research.A study conducted by the University of Nottingham's Centre for Motorcycle Ergonomics and Rider Human Factors and published by the Institute of Advanced Motorists found advanced bikers use better road positioning to anticipate and respond to hazards and are more likely to keep to urban speed limits.
Analysts used a simulator to compare the behaviours of novices, those with advanced qualifications and those with experience but no such certificate.
Dr Alex Stedmon of the Human Factors Research Group said the study is among the most in-depth of its kind to ever be conducted, noting: "It has demonstrated clear differences between the rider groups and potential benefits to advanced training above and beyond rider experience and basic training."
Last week, the government announced new safety ratings for motorcycle helmets, with Road Safety Minister Mike Penning stating 50 deaths could be prevented each year if all riders wore the most protective headgear available.
