Advanced tips offered for safer motoring

Date: 13/5/2011
Vehicle owners in the UK have been offered a few pointers that, if followed, could help them to become better drivers. The Institute of Advanced Motorists' (IAM) chief examiner Peter Rodger says anticipation and the ability to read the road effectively could all stand Britons in good stead when behind the wheel.
He adds that road markings or landmarks, such as bridges or signposts, can be used by drivers to ensure that they are keeping to the two-second rule - where there is that amount of time between them and the motorist in front.
In addition, the expert recommends keeping space all around the vehicle so that there is more time and room available in which to act if a hazard presents itself.
Mr Rodger advises: "All drivers should think about taking further driving training to improve their performance behind the wheel and save money on running and maintenance costs."
The IAM has revealed that it is to continue its work with the government to introduce a new system by which Britons who have recently passed their practical test receive a programme of training designed to improve their skills and reduce incidents of serious accidents involving young people.
