Air-conditioned Tube train to enter service this summer

Air-conditioned Tube train to enter service this summer

Date: 29/6/2010

Those travelling on the London Underground this summer could benefit from measures to keep them cool, as the first air-conditioned Tube train enters service.

Transport for London revealed a number of ways in which it is making journeys on hot days more comfortable, with a full fleet of trains with the cooling systems planned for the Metropolitan line.

Kulveer Ranger, Transport Advisor to Mayor Boris Johnson, said he regularly uses the Tube and is aware how uncomfortable it can be when temperatures rise.

"Cooling the deeper lines remains a considerable challenge, but engineers at [TfL] continue to focus on doing that," he said.

Overground passengers are also to see improvements as the number of air-con-equipped trains is set to rise from its current level of 42 to 54 by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, an exhibition at Aldwych station is showcasing planned changes to the Tube network, including the introduction of 191 air-conditioned trains by 2015.
