Amfibus bus testing to be resumed in Glasgow

Amfibus bus testing to be resumed in Glasgow

Date: 9/2/2010

Testing of a new bus service that operates in and out of water is to be resumed after its first trial was cancelled due to technical problems.

The so-called amfibus in Glasgow was grounded by Stagecoach on Monday during its first trial on the River Clyde.

The fault was connected to an airbag that controls the vehicles suspension, according to reports.

The Stagecoach vehicle can carry 45 passengers on the road and water, when it is powered by twin jets.

It is hoped that in time the new service will help replace a ferry service between Renfrew and Yoker.

Eight other firms have also expressed interest in taking over the crossing, according to the Scotsman.

The ferry will no longer run from March, as part of a cost-saving measure by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport.

The ferry service currently loses around £430,000 a year.
