App launched for monitoring smart car fuel consumption

Date: 5/4/2011

A new mobile phone app has been launched with the aim of helping smart car owners to track their petrol consumption.

The Smart MPG iPhone app developed by Martech Social for Smart Car UK works by allowing drivers to record how much fuel they put into their vehicles' tanks every time they go to the petrol station.

Motorists who own a smart car but do not have an iPhone can input the same figures using a web application on their desktop computers.

An Android version of the application will be launched in the next few months.

"Over time, [recording fill-ups] provides an effective overview of [drivers'] miles per gallon," explains Martech Social Business Development Manager Stephen Uprichard.

"The initial feedback that we have received has been very positive and it is seen as a useful app."

Drivers concerned about their level of fuel consumption may want to take heed of recent advice offered by the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

It recommended following the block changing method of switching gears - rather than going up or down through all of them - to reduce both fuel usage and wear and tear.
