April saw 'surge' in petrol sales to UK motorists

Date: 23/5/2013
Britain's drivers bought a total of 1.51 billion litres of petrol in April - a sharp rise on the record-low 1.37 billion purchased in March, according to HM Revenue and Customs statistics. The figures, highlighted by the AA, are reportedly a result of the lower prices that are now available at the pumps.
Indeed, the insurance provider said that the cost of fuel dropped by around 8p a litre last month - and this appears to have continued into May, with the average price at the beginning of this week standing at 133.75p per litre compared to 140p a litre at the start of March.
AA president Edmund King explained that the EU investigation into fuel pricing needs to uncover potential manipulation of petrol costs in order to provide motorists with protection against price shocks.
"Motoring families are denied any warning of impending surges in pump prices and the ability to brace their budgets against the impact," he said.
