Average speed camera system on A13 upgraded

Date: 27/1/2011
The first average speed camera system of its kind in the UK will begin operating on January 31st, following an upgrade.According to Transport for London (TfL), the cameras are featured on a stretch of the A13 between Canning Town and the Goresbrook Interchange.
It is hoped that the technology will reduce the number of collisions that have taken place at the site, which numbered around 400 between 2007 and 2009.
Of these, more than 70 per cent involved cars or goods vehicles.
Existing fixed and mobile safety cameras will be replaced by the new system, while it is hoped the technology will also improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
David Brown, Managing Director of Surface Transport at TfL, said: "Road safety in the capital is something that the Mayor and TfL take extremely seriously and this new average speed camera system along the A13 is not only a first for London, but a first for the UK."
Earlier in the week, TfL urged motorists to find out if they will be affected by the incoming Low Emission Zone change in standards.
