Average speed cameras 'head to urban roads'

Date: 18/1/2010
While traditional speed cameras are a familiar site on many urban roads, until now average speed cameras have been reserved for high-speed roads. But now average speed cameras are to be fitted along an urban road in London.
As part of a drive to reduce accidents on a key commuter route in to the capital, average speed cameras are being fitted along a 7.5 mile stretch of the A13 from Canning Town to the Goresbrook Interchange.
Transport for London noted that there had been some 500 collisions on this stretch of road from 2006 to 2008, including 34 serious collisions and 3 fatalities. Half of the collisions were the result of speeding, the organisation stated.
The new average speed cameras are being introduced specifically to tackle this problem.
Once the cameras have been installed and successful trials have been completed, the speed limit on the road is going to rise.
