Bath and North-East Somerset await religious school transport decision

Date: 8/4/2013
Religious schools in Bath and North-East Somerset are awaiting the decision of local councillors with regards to the future of subsidised transport for pupils, the Bath Chronicle reports.Under the current system, the Council spends £258,000 a year on free buses and taxis for students travelling to Catholic and Church of England schools, but the cabinet is now looking at ways to reduce the bill.
Among the potential solutions is the possibility of asking parents to contribute more money and gradually withdrawing the financial support available to pupils over the course of seven years.
However, schools have spoken out against potential cuts, and Raymond Friel, the Executive Head Teacher of both St Gregory's and St Mark's, is urging parents to attending the meeting where councillors are set to make their decision.
"I have written to parents with details of how to register to speak and how to contact the cabinet members with your views. Please put the date in your diary and come along if you can," he said.
