Be prepared for winter conditions, says Highways Agency

Date: 16/11/2010
Motorists need to be prepared to deal with severe weather conditions on the roads this winter, the Highways Agency has warned. The organisation stated it has learned from the harsh weather of the last two years and has strengthened its capability to cope with extended periods of snow and ice.
However, Roads Minister Mike Penning stated road users also have a part to play and there are some simple steps they can take to reduce their risk of being caught out by severe weather.
He urged drivers to carry out vehicle checks before beginning a journey, put an emergency kit in their cars, monitor traffic and weather conditions and plan their routes.
The Highways Agency added it has established a salt stock strategy to ensure there is enough salt to deal with icy conditions over winter.
According to the Driving Instructors Association, people should also take care on the roads this month, as autumn brings additional hazards such as dazzle caused by low sun, deep puddles and leaves.
