Belfast to ban buses in centre

Belfast to ban buses in centre

Date: 20/10/2009

All buses are to be banned from part of Belfast City Centre in the long-term.

The plan came after a meeting to discuss road safety was held by various politicians in Northern Ireland.

Transport minister Conor Murphy, social development minister Margaret Ritchie and environment minister Edwin Poots announced the proposed move, which will also restrict bus movements in the short-term.

Mr Poots commented: "The proposed changes will enhance road safety, which has been a matter of considerable concern in the area for some time.

"They will also be good for the environment. If they are implemented as planned, they will deliver a better, cleaner and safer city centre for all the citizens of Belfast."

Donegall Place is the main area affected by the changes, although areas outside of the main shopping district will also see priority traffic lanes for buses constructed.

A 16-year-old died after being hit by a bus in the area last year.
