Bikeability scheme launched in Sheffield

A road safety initiative is taking place in Sheffield to teach school children about riding bikes safely.The Bikeability scheme is government-approved training that has been designed to replace the outdated cycling proficiency test.
A total of £88,000 was awarded to Sheffield City Council by the Department for Transport to offer the training to 2,200 youngsters aged between nine and 13.
Head of Transport and Highways at Sheffield City Council John Bann said: "Basic skills like making sure your bike is roadworthy and you are wearing protective gear are essential for safety."
He added that the training is a valuable way of keeping children safe on the roads.
Bikeability is being provided by Pedal Ready and will be available in most Sheffield schools.
Overall, the government has allocated £11 million to the initiative and a further investment of £24 million will be allocated over the next two years, helping 300,000 youngsters.
