Bikers 'can continue' to use TfL bus lanes

Date: 18/6/2010
Motorcyclists will still be allowed to use bus lanes operated by Transport for London (TfL), according to Mayor Boris Johnson. The move follows an 18-month experiment to see if the procedure would improve road safety in the area.
Findings from the report revealed 51 per cent of bikers moved to bus lanes, rather than continuing to ride on the outside.
It also found journeys made by those using bus lanes were on average ten per cent quicker than riders not using them and 36 per cent faster than cars.
Mr Johnson stated: "The chaos that was predicted by some doomsdayers has clearly not materialised and, as I suspected would be the case, we have found substantial support for the measure."
Riders are Voters welcomed the move, but explained other road users need to play their part in making bus lanes safer for everyone.
Earlier this year, TfL launched its Cycle Safety Action Plan in a bid to make sure the growth of cycling in London continues to be accompanied by a reduced rate in the number of Britons injured on the roads.
