Bikers in the south-west urged to stay safe

Date: 19/5/2010

Motorcycle riders in the south-west are being given the opportunity to attend a road safety event to improve their skills.

Bikers will be able to join advanced police motorcyclists and they will also get the chance to ride around the famous Castle Combe Circuit, which will be hosting the event on June 5th.

Sergeant Martin Munday remarked: "Motorcyclists are the most vulnerable road user, being involved in 14 fatal collisions in Avon and Somerset in 2009."

He added it is a fun day that has a serious message and he noted last year's conference at Haynes Motorcycle Museum attracted more than 700 bikers.

Mr Munday also stated the force goes to various bike meets across Avon and Somerset in a bid to encourage motorbike owners to put their safety and protection first.

Meanwhile, Lancashire Police recently urged older bikers to refresh their riding skills after figures revealed nine out of 11 fatal motorbike collisions involved people over the age of 45.
