Bikers 'should consult SHARP helmet rating'

Bikers 'should consult SHARP helmet rating'

Date: 21/4/2011

Riders looking to buy a new helmet ahead of taking their motorcycle out over the double bank holiday weekend have been urged to put safety first.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said that anyone buying new headgear this weekend should look at the SHARP ratings, which now have reviews of almost 250 different biking helmets.

Some 20 new ratings have been added to the group's site this week alone, making it a good source for motorcycle enthusiasts keen to get the safest helmet available for their budget, the Department for Transport explains..

Mr Penning said: "A well fitted helmet with a high SHARP rating will provide you with the best possible protection in the event of an accident so it's well worth checking the advice on the site before you buy."

Meanwhile, bikers getting their rides out for the first time after a few months were recently advised to thoroughly check their tyres before heading out this weekend.

TyreSafe warned that tyres can deteriorate while a bike is in storage, leading to low pressure, cracking and compromised safety for the rider.
