Bikers without fastened helmets 'are a concern'

Bikers without fastened helmets 'are a concern'

Date: 22/10/2010

There are a worrying number of motorcyclists on the roads who are not wearing their helmets properly, it has been claimed.

Constable Mike Abram of Merseyside Police's road policing department told the Wirral Globe many bikers had been stopped and prosecuted for not having their chin straps fastened during a five-week campaign.

The initiative is due to end on October 31st and has involved traffic officers speaking to motorcyclists about responsible riding and the importance of protective clothing.

Mr Abram said if an individual was to be thrown off their bike without their helmet properly fastened it would be "very likely" the helmet would come off and ultimately result in serious injuries or possibly death.

"Although this campaign is drawing to a close we will still all be working hard to ensure urban driving is as safe as possible," he added.

The Peterborough Evening Telegraph recently reported young motorcyclists were encouraged to attend a road safety event being organised by the SaferPeterborough partnership.
