Birmingham gets new coach and lorry park

Date: 16/1/2012
Hauliers and coach operators can now take advantage of a new dedicated coach and lorry park in Birmingham city centre. The area has been without such a site since the Masshouse Coach and Lorry Park closed in 2002.
However, the new facilities now provide 32 CCTV-monitored coach or lorry spaces with showers, toilets and a restroom.
They have also utilised market intelligence regarding lorry parking put together by the Department for Transport.
Director of Policy at the Road Haulage Association (RHA) Jack Semple said the move is good news for road safety as drivers are required by law to take regular breaks.
He added the city "has been very poorly served in terms of suitable truck parking" with a lack of facilities for drivers and quality security.
"We applaud Birmingham City Council for taking the issue seriously and hope many more drivers will be able to rest easy," Mr Semple continued.
At the end of last year, the RHA welcomed the government's decision to scrap a fuel duty increase that was set to be introduced at the beginning of 2012.
