Body language 'plays an important role in driver signalling'

Date: 22/7/2011
UK drivers have been advised not to underestimate the power of body language when behind the wheel.Peter Rodger, Chief Examiner with road safety charity the IAM, explained that some motorists will not always provide adequate signals when driving, but people can still discern a lot by their speed and positioning.
For example, if they begin to slow down for no immediately apparent reason, they could well be about to make a manoeuvre.
"Giving signals is a way of talking to other road users so they can plan their actions," Mr Rodger remarked, adding that these should always be timely, clear and necessary so as to give others as much advance warning as possible when changing direction or speed.
Earlier this month, the expert reminded car drivers and motorcyclists that they share the road - and motorists should make sure they give bikers enough space, while avoiding driving on their nearside.
