Boris Johnson targets 'world's first Ultra Low Emission Zone'

Date: 26/2/2013
The Mayor of London announced plans earlier this month to create the world's first Ultra Low Emission Zone in the centre of the capital.According to the Mayor's Office, the move will aim to ensure that all vehicles driving in central London during working hours are zero or low emission, with 2020 set as a target date for the introduction of such a measure.
In a speech delivered to City Hall on February 13th, Boris Johnson said that the scheme could be a "game changing moment" for London, improving the capital's environment and stimulating the low emission technology market.
"My vision is a central zone where almost all the vehicles running during working hours are either zero or low emission. This would deliver incredible benefits in air quality and stimulate the delivery and mass use of low emission technology," he explained.
Under existing plans, all central London buses will be hybrid by 2020 while taxis will be zero emissions.
