Boris Johnson announces London's future transport plans

Date: 13/10/2009

London mayor Boris Johnson has outlined his plans to make the British capital the best large city on earth.

The plans, which have been published as three interlinked strategy documents, set out initiatives to enhance quality of life for all Londoners through better transport policies, affordable housing and improving the environment.

Mr Johnson said that he now wanted to listen to what Londoners thought of the proposal.

"Together we will create a better, cleaner, greener and more liveable city where heritage is valued and the future is embraced," he said.

Among the mayor's plans are ensuring one in five parking spaces has a power supply for electric cars and upgrading the tube and London Overground.

Mention was also made of "Crossrail Two", which would link Chelsea to Hackney after 2020.

Last weekend, visitors to the Earl's Court Cycle Show got the chance to test new hire bikes that will be coming to London from next summer.
