Brake calls for renewed commitment to road safety

Date: 24/6/2010
More needs to be done to improve road safety levels on the UK's roads, Brake has argued. The charity welcomed government statistics showing casualties have fallen, but called for higher targets to be set to ensure every opportunity to protect road users is taken.
Campaigns Officer Ellen Booth suggested the new government has a chance to continue with reductions, stating: "[We] need a bold strategy that spells out the importance of investing in road safety."
According to the Department for Transport figures, the number of people killed as a result of road accidents declined by 12 per cent in 2009, compared to the previous year.
The number of pedestrians to be fatally injured was down 13 per cent, while a six per cent drop in reported child casualties was seen.
Brake recently named Iain Duncan Smith as its parliamentarian of the month, with the former Conservative Party leader recognised for championing the rights of children to get to school safely.
