Brake welcomes drink-drive limit reduction in Scotland

Date: 29/5/2012

The drink-drive limit in Scotland is to be reduced.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill announced the limit will be lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg later this year.

The news has been welcomed by road safety charity Brake, which claimed this is a "step in the right direction" when it comes to tackling the problem.

General Manager at Brake Sarah Fatica said the British government should follow suit and introduce a similar policy.

However, more must still be done to demonstrate the dangers of drink driving to motorists.

"Far too many lives are lost on UK roads annually because of drink drivers. If we had a zero-tolerance approach to drink driving, lives would be saved," Ms Fatica said.

Earlier this year, the British government launched a panel to discuss drug driving and whether certain substances have the same impairing effect on drivers as the current blood alcohol level.
