Bright buses celebrate Northampton's transport history

Date: 12/4/2013
Two Northampton buses have been painted in the town's historic colours to celebrate 100 years of transport in the area.As the Northampton Chronicle & Echo reports, Stagecoach has carried out a tribute to the old network by kitting out a modern double-decker bus in green - the colour of the United Counties vehicles that operated from 1921 to 1987.
A second bus that was built in 1966 has been painted in red, although the time it will spend in service will be restricted due to the need for it to be run by a conductor and a driver with experience of using a manual 'crash' gearbox.
Buses first ran in Northampton in 1913, when the Wellingborough & District Motor Omnibus Company was responsible for running routes through the town.
And with the services having changed between operators numerous times since, the decision to repaint existing buses in previous colours is testament to the historical nature of the network.
