Britain to get new cycle routes

Date: 7/3/2012

Thousands of new cycle routes are to be introduced in the UK.

The project is part of a £30 million package to make the country greener, encourage people to be more active and better connect communities.

Some 38 new routes have been agreed upon, each of which will feature lighting and CCTV to keep users as safe as possible.

Furthermore, over 7,500 new cycle spaces will be introduced at train stations.

Transport Minister Norman Baker described the changes as hugely beneficial for the country by making the mode of transport more convenient.

"They will also help to create jobs and reduce our carbon footprints while making cycling safer and more convenient - further emphasising the government's dedication to offer sustainable transport for all," he added.

At the recent Best of the Best Fleet Safety Forum Conference, fleet operators were urged to be more aware of cyclists on Britain's roads, with some organisations calling for additional safety measures to be added to trucks, such as blind spot mirrors.
