British drivers against road privatisation, study shows

Date: 29/5/2012
The majority of British drivers are against the privatisation of the country's roads. This is according to a new study conducted by TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk, which found 81 per cent of respondents do not agree with the idea.
Plans were first announced by David Cameron back in March, when he revealed the Department for Transport and the Treasury will conduct a feasibility study into the idea.
According to the coalition, privatisation would ensure roads are better maintained, while helping to reduce the UK's Budget deficit.
It could also see the introduction of a new road pricing system that would charge drivers based on the number of miles they travel, instead of the current tax arrangements.
Editor of TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk Faye Sutherland welcomed the introduction of an alternative taxing solution, but admitted motorists are likely to be worried by the changes.
She said: "As the jaded motorist faces ever-increasing costs, is it any surprise that they are sceptical about privatisation?"
