British motorists driving abroad urged to stay safe

Date: 5/7/2010
British motorists planning to drive abroad need to pay attention on the roads, one expert has suggested. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has released guidance to help keep drivers out of danger when behind the wheel in other countries.
IAM chief examiner Peter Rodger remarked: "Roundabouts, unfamiliar road layouts and foreign signposting can make even the most experienced motorist anxious about driving abroad."
The organisation recommends motorists take regular breaks when travelling as tiredness can lead to accidents, which could prove fatal.
It noted if it is possible, drivers should try to swap around on a regular basis, as well as planning the routes and taking up-to-date maps.
The establishment also highlighted the dangers associated with overtaking other automobiles and driving a right-hand car on the other side of the road means it will prove difficult to see what is ahead.
Last month, Nigel Davies from Auto Windscreens said Britons who wear glasses and are planning to drive in Spain need to make sure they keep a spare pair in their vehicles, as those who do not will be breaking the law.
