Britons 'reducing speed to save fuel'

Date: 20/6/2011

Many Britons are altering their motoring habits in an attempt to reduce the amount they spend on fuel.

According to a poll by Green Flag, 58 per cent of drivers have lowered their speed so that they can better conserve fuel, while 46 per cent regularly shop around to find a cheaper petrol and diesel station.

Meanwhile, 42 per cent of respondents have opted to walk more than use their car, while seven per cent have swapped their four-wheel vehicle for a motorbike.

Furthermore, 14 per cent of motorists are now planning to either sell their car or upgrade to a greener model, while an additional 14 per cent have stopped using their motor.

Henry Topham, Head of Green Flag, says: "For many drivers, owning a vehicle is a necessity rather than a luxury, so they are being forced into driving more fuel economically or switching to more fuel-efficient modes of transportation in the face of rising prices."

Elsewhere, research by swiftcover.com recently revealed that 750,000 car owners have missed taking their vehicle for its annual service in order to save money.
