Brits 'believe other drivers pose road safety risk'

Date: 10/3/2011
Many drivers feel concerned about their safety when they are in control of their car, but the majority believe the greatest risk to them is posed by other road users.According to a survey carried out by Brake and Direct Line, 69 per cent of respondents are consciously concerned about being killed while behind the wheel, but of these, only one per cent felt they themselves performed below the average in terms of safe driving.
Meanwhile, 98 per cent think they are as safe as or safer than the typical motorist.
However, 35 per cent of vehicle owners believe that the number of dangerous drivers on the roads outweigh those they consider to be safe.
Andy Goldby, Director of Motor Underwriting at Direct Line, said: "In previous research, we have discovered that large numbers of drivers admit to speeding, drink driving and driving whilst tired, demonstrating that many drivers either don't see these as important, or need to seriously re-examine their attitude to safe driving. "
Commenting on the research, the Institute of Advanced Motorists' Director of Policy and Research Neil Greig noted very few accidents are unavoidable so it is important for motorists to take responsibility.
