Brits 'want to know eco credentials of cars'

Date: 6/7/2011
Clear and comprehensive information about the impact individual vehicles have on health and the environment is something that Britons are interested in seeing.A recent survey conducted by TheGreenCarWebsite.co.uk reveals that 89 per cent of respondents want to see all of the emission outputs linked to a motor on its environmental rating, rather than just the carbon measurement.
Currently, labels on new cars only list the CO2 emissions that are released from the tailpipe, while details on nitrogen oxide, particulate matter and hydrocarbons do not have to be included.
In addition, the website notes that drivers are largely aware that CO2 is something that is being tackled by the transport industry in order to help reduce climate change.
However, it is the other motor emissions that can have a significant impact on human health, having been linked to respiratory problems, heart disease and shortened life expectancy.
The UK government is currently working to enhance green travel initiatives through its Local Sustainable Transport Fund.
This cash pot is worth £560 million and will be used over the next four years to help support projects deemed to protect the environment and boost economic growth.
