Burning toast 'brings King's Cross to a halt'

Burning toast 'brings King's Cross to a halt'

Date: 23/4/2010

A major London Underground station has had to close twice in recent times after burnt toast set off the fire alarms.

Staff at King's Cross have been warned by Transport for London (TfL), which operates the rail services at the site, to be more careful after the facility was shut down on March 13th and April 7th following false alarms.

During the two incidents, firefighters were rushed to the location to battle potential flames, only to find that the billowing smoke was the result of an unattended toaster in the station's staff room.

A spokesperson for TfL said: "Staff have been reminded to take care when using the cooking facilities and we would like to apologise to customers for any inconvenience caused."

The Rail, Maritime and Transport union and Network Rail last week resumed talks concerning plans to axe jobs and make significant changes to working hours following the cancellation of a planned four-day strike.
