Date: 15/10/2009
London's transport system is set to get more expensive for users. The capital's mayor Boris Johnson has announced today (October 15th)that bus fares would be going up by 12.7 per cent while tube tickets would rise by 3.9 per cent.
He said that he regretted having to make the statement and said it was not a decision he had taken lightly.
"I am determined to ensure that fares in London will continue to deliver excellent value for money, particularly when compared to the fares charged in other UK cities," Mayor Johnson added.
Bus fares using an Oyster pay as you go card will go up from £1 to £1.20, while the Zone 1 Oyster pay as you go rate will increase from £1.60 to £1.80.
The mayor is also expected to make an announcement soon on the implementation of the Oyster pay as you go service being used on all national rail services within Greater London.
Four in ten bus passengers will still travel for free or at a substantially reduced cost on the network.
The planned fare rises will come into effect next year.
