Calderdale police 'catch hundreds breaking road safety laws'

Date: 5/1/2011
Hundreds of people were caught breaking driving rules when police in Calderdale took to the roads recently as part of a driver safety campaign. The Halifax Evening Courier reports that officers involved in Calderdale Road Safety Week during November caught 258 people speeding during the period.
Meanwhile, 23 were found to be not wearing a seatbelt, while a further 17 were stopped for using a mobile phone while in control of a vehicle.
Problems with the cars themselves also led to drivers being stopped, with eight vehicles found to have defects with their tyres.
Sergeant Chris Boyd said: "The fact that so many offences have been detected during that week emphasises the need to keep spreading the road safety message."
David Short, Calderdale Council's Road Safety Project Manager and Co-ordinator of the week, claimed that the single most important thing drivers can do is slow down, particularly when in residential areas or near to schools.
Calderdale Council was recently named in the government-supported Driving for Better Business awards.
