Calderdale residents urged to support road safety week

Date: 15/11/2010
Calderdale is showing its support for National Road Safety Week by organising a number of projects that residents have been encouraged to get involved with. From November 21st-28th, there will be a remembrance service for accident victims, free winter car checks offered at garages and road safety staff on hand to speak to drivers at petrol stations.
Each day will cover a different topic, including speeding, wearing seatbelts, use of mobile phones behind the wheel and drink driving.
David Short, Calderdale's Road Safety Project Manager and coordinator of the events, said: "We want the community to really get behind this week of action."
He urged people to attend the remembrance service on November 21st not only to support the bereaved but also to show "that we are all going to do something positive to make the roads safer."
Dorset Police recently announced new plans to tackle the number of people who drive without a seatbelt, under which motorists caught without a restraint will be given the choice of completing an e-learning course rather than paying a fine.
