Cambridge Cycling Campaign calls for devolution of local transport powers

Date: 21/5/2013
The Cambridge Cycling Campaign has urged local authorities to establish two separate transport committees in a bid to devolve responsibility for different areas of the county.According to the Campaign, a Greater Cambridge Transport Committee would take charge of projects in the City of Cambridge and south Cambridgeshire, while a Cambridgeshire Market Town Transport Committee would cover Huntingdonshire, Fenland and East Cambridgeshire.
"We believe that the transport issues faced by the sparsely populated rural areas of northern Cambridgeshire are markedly different from those of urban Cambridge and its immediate surroundings, and that each is naturally dealt with by people familiar with the local area," the campaigners argue.
The group says that a Greater Cambridge Transport Committee could assume responsibility for the improvement work required on the A14 - as well as the Foxton railway crossing.
Equally, the Cambridgeshire Market Town Transport Committee would oversee attempts to enhance safety standards along roads such as the A141 and A142.
