Cambridge electric car chargers yet to be used

Date: 9/11/2010

New electric car charging points installed in Cambridge are yet to be used by a single motorist, it has emerged.

The Cambridge News reports no one signed up to the scheme during its first month of operation, after two bays were set up at both the Grafton East and Queen Anne Terrace car parks that allow people to charge their car batteries for up to three hours, free of charge.

Clare Blair, Cambridge City Council's Climate Change Chief, warned it is still early days for the £22,000 project.

"The key issue is that we do need to be prepared to provide facilities that are at the leading edge of helping people to choose more sustainable transport," she continued.

Ms Blair added the local authority is certain usage will increase over time.

Chief Executive of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Paul Everitt recently said it is important the public understand the benefits of electric vehicles during a time of fast-paced changes in the industry.
