Cambridgeshire road safety scheme wins international award

Date: 8/10/2010

A Cambridgeshire project has been awarded an international accolade for significantly reducing the number of collisions on a stretch of road.

The Prince Michael International Road Safety Award was presented to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership and Speed Check Services (SCS) for the A14 scheme.

Over a 22-km stretch, the organisations decreased the number of deaths and serious injuries by more than 68 per cent and saved the economy over £4 million a year through the use of average speed enforcement cameras.

Clinton Hale of Cambridgeshire Safety Camera Unit, who collected the award alongside SCS Sales and Marketing Director Geoff Collins, said: "Speed increases the risk of serious injury and death … The cameras encourage motorists to acknowledge this and drive at more appropriate speeds, making a difficult journey safer."

A recent study by the Institute of Advanced Motorists found 60 per cent of drivers have trouble complying with speed limits, even though 90 per cent intend to do so.
