Campaign launched to keep Dorset motorists safe

Date: 13/7/2010
Motorists in Dorset are being targeted in a new initiative to crack down on those who use mobile phones behind the wheel.Drivers who do not wear seat belts will also be reprimanded, the Dorset Echo reports.
According to the news provider, the results of the region's No Excuse campaign revealed approximately one-third of individuals stopped by officials were either using a phone or not belted up.
A spokesman from the organisation stated: "The message from both Dorset's No Excuse campaign and the Government's Think! programme is stark - all phone calls and text messages distract from driving."
He added people who use a mobile phone when driving are four times more likely to be involved in a collision.
Last month, Dr Chris Steele explained motoring while impaired by medication can have the same effects as drink-driving.
The GP suggested people should speak to their doctor or pharmacist before they drive if they take regular prescription drugs.
