Campaign launched to warn young drivers of speeding dangers

Date: 16/11/2010
A Northumberland safety campaign has been launched to warn young people of the dangers of speeding. The Journal reports the initiative comes after two 17-year-old boys lost their lives in separate accidents on rural roads last year, one just six days after passing his test.
County police, council officials and the fire and rescue service have joined forces to implement the No Need to Speed project, which kicked off with a demonstration of car crash victims being cut free from vehicles.
Neville Wharrier, a Neighbourhood Sergeant for Alnwick, said: "A lot of young people think they are invincible in cars … Hopefully this campaign will raise the awareness of young people about the dangers on rural roads."
Inexperienced motorists were recently urged to be particularly cautious at this time of year by Steve Garrod, Group Manager of the Driving Instructors Association, who stated autumnal weather conditions bring hazards that new drivers may never have operated a vehicle in before.
