Campaign to keep bikers safe is launched

Date: 17/6/2010
A motorcycle awareness campaign aimed at those who drive cars has been launched to reduce the number of injuries and fatalities involving bikers.Lancashire Police have teamed up with Lancashire County Council's Road Safety Group to offer car drivers advice on how to help keep those on two wheels safe, Motorcycle News reports.
A range of methods will be used in the initiative and posters with the message that 62 per cent of motorcycle crashes in the region are not caused by the rider will be put up across the area.
Deputy Road Safety Group Manager Alan Fisher remarked: "We would like all motorcyclists to get the most out of riding on our scenic roads and hope we can help them be safer doing so."
People who use the form of transport will also have the opportunity to have a free assessment in a bid to improve their skills and those who run automobiles can also attend a Drive On session to refresh their knowledge.
Mr Fisher noted no exams are involved, instead riding instructors will be on hand to dish out safety advice.
Last month, a survey conducted on behalf of the Motor Cycle Industry Association found motorcycle support services, such as courier firms, are worth approximately £940 million to the UK economy.
