Car checks 'can facilitate a great summer break'

Date: 5/8/2011
There are a number of basic checks that people should give their car if they are planning to go on a long road journey this summer.According to the Institute of the Motor Industry, this can ensure that families enjoy a safe motoring experience, while reducing the likelihood of an unexpected breakdown.
The group spoke to engineer John Tinham to find out what his advice was for giving a vehicle a onceover prior to a seasonal road trip.
He suggested checking the coolant levels while the engine is cold and having the air conditioning serviced to ensure a comfortable trip in hot weather.
Britons planning on towing a caravan should make sure they examine its tyres and brakes before setting off, while the tyre pressures of the car should also be investigated.
Mr Tinham added: "If you decide to take your vehicle for a service, make sure no extra work is carried out without your permission and ensure you know the costs involved. Finally, get an itemised bill and an explanation regarding the work carried out."
Drivers planning to travel down rural A roads may wish to heed the recent advice of Peter Rodger of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, who said on routes where there are potholes or loose rubble it is worth checking the tyres once stopped to see if they have been damaged.
