Car manufacturers 'need stricter green guidelines'

Date: 15/4/2011

The motor industry may find huge benefits from making more moves into the green car sector, a group has noted.

According to Friends of the Earth, there is a need for stricter targets over the efficiency of modern vehicles and the organisation pointed out that with the advent of much new technology, the chance to make motors more efficient is available to manufacturers.

Biofuels Campaigner at the group Kenneth Richter said that "all of the research" he has seen so far shows that as a planet, "we urgently need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. That needs to happen in all sectors and transport is a very important one."

The Automotive Council recently published a long-term strategy aimed at helping commercial vehicle manufacturers and makers of construction equipment to become more eco-conscious.

Included in the strategy is a "roadmap" showing the timescales of the development of technology in the sector.
