Caravan owners 'should choose correct car'

Date: 7/10/2011
One of the first things a newcomer to the world of touring caravans should be aware of is the need to get the right combination of mobile home and car.Such is the opinion of Martin Spencer, Technical Manager for the Caravan Club, although he explains that it is unusual for people to make this error as most "inherently realise" that it is not possible to tow a large caravan behind a tiny car.
However, he suggests looking to someone who can offer impartial advice, rather than completely trusting a dealer recommending consumers purchase a large mobile home as they might be bias.
Mr Spencer adds that after this it is important for drivers to load the trailer correctly in order to ensure that it fits within legal limits.
Finally, drivers should ensure they are sensible behind the wheel, particularly when moving at speed, he says.
He notes: "The most common mistake is, ironically, while [caravanners] get a certain degree of flack from other drivers for always driving too slowly, I would say actually going too fast is much more of a practical problem."
The Caravan Club claims to be the largest touring organisation of its type in Europe, with over half of UK caravan enthusiasts signed up as members.
