Caravan towers urged to stay safe

Date: 26/5/2010

West Midlands Police have launched Operation Velopy in a bid to cut the number of caravan-related accidents during the Bank Holiday weekend.

Officers will be giving advice to motorists and caravan owners this Friday (May 28th) as thousands of people head to the West Country.

Representatives from the Highways Agency, the Caravan Club, the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency and the Central Motorway Police Group will be based at the Strensham service area on the M5 between 09:00 and 17:30 BST.

Sergeant Dean Caswell stated: "We will have some really experienced and knowledgeable people on hand during the operation who will be examining outfits and advising drivers throughout the day."

He added some people have unstable caravans – which increases the chances of a collision occurring - as they have not set up the towing outfit correctly.

Meanwhile, road safety charity Brake has revealed 72 per cent of respondents admit to going above the speed limit on roads within a 30mph zone in towns and villages.
