Chances of driving convictions 'increase after passing a test'

Chances of driving convictions 'increase after passing a test'

Date: 29/2/2012

Motorists are more likely to make a car insurance claim in the first year after passing their test than when they are learning, figures have revealed.

Data from cover provider Admiral also showed these individuals have an increased chance of receiving a conviction.

The research found there was a difference between men and women, with females 4.5 times more likely to make a claim in their first year of driving than when they had a provisional licence.

This figure fell to 2.2 among male motorists.

Acting Managing Director Dave Halliday said the results are worrying.

"When learning, you're under supervision … but the ability to drive independently means confidence can soar, particularly with peer pressure when a new driver is carrying passengers," he added.

This comes after the Road Haulage Association recently stated learner drivers should be given specialist motorway training before they are allowed to use these routes.
