'Check tyres ahead of holidays,' drivers urged

'Check tyres ahead of holidays,' drivers urged

Date: 15/7/2011

Inspecting their car's tyres should be something that all motorists do before they take their vehicle away with them on holiday.

TyreSafe notes that among the points to check are tread depth, correct inflation for the car's weight - including any additional holiday load being carried - and that the condition of the wheels is positive in general.

Failure to take these steps could increase the risk of an accident occurring on the road, while also resulting in higher fuel consumption and a shorter lifespan for the tyres, the group claims.

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of TyreSafe, says: "Whether you're heading overseas in your car, or staying in the UK, correct tyre maintenance is vital to reduce the risk of being stranded by the roadside or involved in an accident as a result of a tyre-related issue."

In order to avoid this happening, drivers should make sure they examine their pressure levels before every long journey using an accurate gauge and at a time when the wheels are cold.

The Institute of Advanced Motorists recently noted that other precautions that need to be taken before setting out on holiday in the car include ensuring there is nothing obstructing the rear view and checking that all luggage is tightly packed together.
