Children urged 'to be bright and be seen'

Children urged 'to be bright and be seen'

Date: 28/10/2010

Youngsters have been encouraged to be bright and be seen in a new government campaign ahead of the clocks going back this weekend (October 31st).

The Department for Transport's THINK! initiative aims to remind children of the importance of being visible to drivers.

Road Safety Minister Mike Penning said although the number of under-18s killed on Britain's streets has been reduced by 82 per cent over the last 20 years, more needs to be done to cut the amount of youngsters who still lose their lives in collisions.

"Making sure that children are easily seen by drivers is important all-year round but especially at this time of year when evenings are getting darker," he commented.

The campaign's advice for staying safe includes wearing brightly-coloured or fluorescent clothing in daylight and at dusk, while reflective gear is needed at night

Earlier this month, Hector Nicolson of Central Scotland Police spoke to the Stirling Observer about the importance of cyclists having their lights switched on as the evenings grow darker.
