China's Railway and Transport Ministries 'set to merge'

Date: 27/2/2013

China's Ministry of Railways may be set to merge with the country's Ministry of Transport later this year, China.org reports.

With the 12th (NPC) National People's Congress scheduled to open next Tuesday (March 5th), it is expected that a number of central authorities will be combined following the event as part of attempts to unify government bodies that share similar functions.

The reshuffle looks set to affect a number of departments, with the onus on shrinking staff and improving administrative efficiency.

This will not be the first time that attempts have been made to merge the two Ministries, as similar steps were taken in 2008.

However, efforts to form a new body by bringing the Ministry of Railways and Ministry of Transport together failed on that occasion, and the authorities will be hoping that fresh efforts to merge the two will prove more successful than they have done in the past.
