Christmas road safety campaign launched

Date: 7/12/2010
A Christmas road safety campaign by Strathclyde Police began yesterday (December 6th).According to the Cummock Chronicle, the initiative was launched with a crack team of officers patrolling the roads from 07:00 GMT in order to catch any motorist putting others at risk.
It will run until January 3rd in order to encapsulate the whole party season.
A team of road policing officers will be using automatic number plate recognition, high-visibility patrols and road checks in the fight against driving under the influence, while a number of unmarked cars will also be keeping an eye out for offending motorists.
Chief Inspector Stewart Carle of the Road Policing Department explained while there has been a lot of publicity surrounding festive road safety, some drivers still put others at risk.
"My advice to any motorist who is tempted to drive after taking drink or drugs is; please don't risk it. The consequences can be fatal," he added.
Elsewhere, Road Safety Minister Mike Penning recently launched a THINK! scheme offering designated drivers free soft drinks.
