CNG conversion planned for Dubai buses

Date: 13/4/2011

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has revealed that it intends to convert its fleet of 1,500 buses to run on compressed natural gas (CNG).

Speaking to Zawaya at the International Association of Public Transport (UITP) Dubai and Mobility Expo, Mohammed Abu Baker Al Hashemi, Director of Strategic Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency, stated that one bus will be converted as a pilot project initially.

He added that the CNG-run vehicle is expected to be in use within the next two months.

"We are always looking at green solutions and since our bus fleet is very new, we can't afford to discard them and have new, alternative-powered vehicles. CNG is the most practical choice for us because it is both clean and cheap," Mr Al Hashemi explained to the publication.

The UITP congress and exhibition opened on April 10th, with 300 companies from 37 countries gathering to display and discuss the latest innovations in transportation technology.
